splinter, our newest family member

this is splinter, our newest family member. i think he's living underneath ana's sculpture table! i saw some poop today next to the table! boo! but he's soooo cute!!!!!

i mistook it for a rat when i first saw splinter cause he's not very big at all...

note at 0:35 when i show you the cat food bag with a hole that splinter made last night cause i didn't put out food in the food tray like i normally do. so impatient!

grounded love

one of my favorite contemporary sculptors is german artist, katharina fritsch.

the image with the people around it is her piece, but the version i saw at the matthew marks gallery years ago was made entirely of just mirror pogs (no yellow or black) in it.

it's weird, because if you think about it, all it is.... is just pogs in the shape of a giant heart.

but gosh darn it, i almost cried because i thought it was so beautiful.

when you are standing there in the quiet of an art gallery, it might tip you off of any type of emotional equilibrium you are on.

my friend dana a. says that when she finally saw the sistine chapel, she started bawling.

the only other piece that has ever moved me to tears is picasso's desmoiselles d'avignon. first off, i am always shocked at the size of any piece of art i've only seen via textbook. i didn't expect it to be HUGE... larger than lifesize. i sat there on the bench and just took it in.

during the rainy season in los angeles, my backyard went nuts. so in a fit of obsessive thinking, i decided to try and mow the entire backyard... it took me two days to reach the image above...

although i wasn't thinking about katharina fritsch's piece, i thought about it two days later and thought that was cool.

initially, i was gonna try and mow the word CRAZY like in the aerosmith video of the same name.

but if i were to do that, i'd need a shirtless farmer to help me navigate the turns... and i was like, too much time...

so i ended up with a heart...

i've actually re-mowed it so make it a little bit more easy to tell what it is... but i need a ladder to get myself on my roof so that i can photograph it that way before i mow it away... maybe.

it's probably nice for the ghetto birds circling my hood to follow crackhead dealers during drug busts... i wish i had access to it so that i could see my backyard topiary...

maybe if i leave it long enough, i'll see it on googlemaps.

sadness

so there's been a big black dog spotted in my backyard. the first time i saw it was on thanksgiving morning at around 5am. i looked out my bathroom window as i normally do to look at my rabbit hutch... and in the pen that i keep the rabbits in during the daytime, there was something big and black and furry just moving around.

of course this freaked the shite out of me. and several seconds later, a giant dog... somewhere between a big labrador and giant st. bernard... goes over to the hutch and just looks at my bunnies... the bunnies were totally thumping (which is what they do when they're threatened) and i was like "AHHHHHH!"

i woke phillip up and said "there's a giant dog outside the house!!!!! and it's looking at the bunnies!!!!!!"

seriously, the dog was bigger than ana.

so phillip woke up from his sleep and the first things out of his mouth was "shit, that's a huge fucking dog."

and when it hear us, and also phillip turned on the backlight, it left.

two nights later, i heard the rabbits thumping again. so i sent phillip outside to check.

we didn't see the dog, BUT i had just cleaned out the bunny pen and so there was all this water on the ground... and THERE ARE GIANT DOG PAWS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HUTCH!

(picture to come)

so i've been hella scared of going outside at night now. like, if you know where i lived, you'd know that i'm alway worried that something/someone would be in my backyard. i've already found some guy in my yard once before.

so last night, i fell asleep without putting the bunnies in the hutch, so i woke up after 1am and did the hutch.

i probably finished around two. i heat them a hot water bottle to try and keep them warm in their hideaway room.

anyways... around 3am or so, i heard them thumping. so i looked out my window but i didn't see anything... but they would repeatedly thump.

i turned on the backlight and didn't see anything... but the rabbits were thumping.

so this morning when we woke up, phillip told me that everything in the turtle pond was fucked up. the plants were knocked over, the filter system was not working...

so i get out of bed and looked at the mess...

the other thing is that we have residents who live across the street from us and they are ALWAYS getting raided... so there was like, five cop cars outside... maybe a drug dealer ran into my yard...

anyways.. we saw a turtle so we're like, i'll fix it after breakfast.

when i went to start the clean up... i looked around and ALL I SAW WAS ONE TURTLE AND ONE FISH.

for those of you who don't know, I HAVE FOUR TURTLES AND FOUR GOLDFISHES...

i start freaking out. i tell phillip and saul that all i see is one turtle!!!!

so saul went outside and we FOUND ONE UNDERNEATH THE TRASH CAN HIDING!

i looked at my plants and noticed a giant bite mark as well as a claw cut into the leaf. it was that damn black dog!

so we have one healthy turtle and the turtle we found outside, is missing its right front leg. :(

sadness.

the three giant orange goldfish/coyfish are gone. there's only one white fish left.

boo.

i'm so scared to be outside by myself right now! that dog is HUGE!

meet the neighbors

so i'm convinced that one of the daughters that live next door (i'm not sure how many people there are in that family) is sneaking home at night into her room through my side of the fence. i've found a beach bag with sandals, suntan lotion, etc on the fence between their property and mine recently.... and last night, i heard a lot of heavy foot schuffling next to my bedroom window around 2am-ish. it was too heavy and sloppy to be an opposum i think.

i hope she's using protection with her harley riding goatee wearing boyfriend of hers (i imagine)! i bet you his name is probably weasel... or tiny.

Ryan Trecartin

September 10 - December 7, 2008

Ryan Trecartin's videos uncannily reflect his generation, which grew up using the Internet, digital television, and interactive video games. He mixes cheap special effects with absurd narratives in which he and his regular cast of collaborator-friends act out a sort of Lord of the Flies for the 21st century. He tells sad love stories and bizarre family dramas utilizing technology to heighten the action and reflect today's incessant information overload.

In his latest work, I-BE AREA (2007, 108 min) Trecartin weaves together several unruly stories with fast-moving, fast-talking characters that deal with such themes as cloning, adoption, self-mediation, lifestyle options, virtual identities, and larger questions of an existential nature. I-BE AREA screens in the Video Gallery on the hour, every other hour.

This exhibition is organized by Hammer Curator Ali Subotnick.

first week of school

this is the first week for me at my fourth college. i've been to nyu, f.i.t., pcc, and now csla.

it's summer and it's warm and one of my classes doesn't have air conditioning in the room... and it's full of computers. that's just weird.

when i walked outside, i got out on the wrong side of the building but i saw this view and it was pretty awesome. these are the times when i think that southern california is beautiful.

would you still like me if i....

wear this while i drive?

daphne's vs gwyneth

i actually like eating food from daphne's, a greek chain restaurant. there's one sorta near me in arcadia/pasadena.

everytime i go there, i see this painting, which i assume, is of the greek myth about daphne whom i believe turns into a tree which produces the leaves that are made into laurel's (the crown of leaves you see in greek myths).

i however, cannot get over the fact that i think the painting makes daphne look a lot like gwyneth paltrow.

girls gone wildlife

www.girlsgonewildlife.org

my friends debbie and karin just began their cross-country trek across america (los angeles to new york city) on sunday. i was lucky enough to spend half of that day with them before they took off!

we went to have vegan lunch in santa monica and then we held some ribbon up for them to cross to signify the starting-line of their journey at the santa monica pier!

it was pretty awe-inspiring and scary at the same time!

go check out their website and diary as they cross america to promote environmental causes as well as the world wildlife fund!

here's me on karin's bicycle. it was HEAVY with shit that they're gonna need during their trip like tents, sleeping bags, clothes, bike fixing supplies, first aid kit, maps, cameras, food, and stuff like that.

sex and the city: the movie

so after the death of my beloved houdini, i took a shower and thought that maybe going to see the sex and the city movie would make me feel better.

i was right. i cried several times throughout the movie and i laughed several times throughout the movie.

it definitely made me miss new york city and i am even more close to samantha's character since she moved to los angeles and got fat. all that i'm missing is the next door neighbor with a giant uncut penis.

i highly recommend the movie to anyone whos'... well, anyone.

malls

I HATE MALLS.

when i am bored in los angeles, there are few things i can do outside my home that is near me. one of the things i do is go to the mall. I HATE THE MALL. it's one of the few places that will temporarily distract me. although, when i say distraction, i mean, distraction by annoyance. i hate going to the same stores that are found in every WESTFIELD malls: old navy, the gap, hot topic, torrid, the body shop, hollister, frederick's of hollywood.

the other day, phillip and i were bored and so we decided that we needed to do something. so he said "lets do what you love to do... go to the mall." and that sorta bothered me. cause in the near decade that i was in nyc, i was in the manhattan mall maybe a total of five times... and in those five times, it was because i couldn't find the right exit for the n,r,q,w train and ended up on the escalators for the manhattan mall (the subway is connected to it for you non-new yorkers).

this weekend, phillip, ana, saul, and i went to the glendale galleria. i've only been there once before, for approximately ten minutes because juanita was looking for her wedding dress at macy's and the only macy's with the correct size was at the glendale galleria... so we got there ten minutes before closing time to pick it up. i don't even remember if she bought it.... but that was my only taste of g.g. before this weekend.

after trekking through the mall for THREE hours.... i decided that I HATE MALLS FOREVER.

the same stores in every mall... victoria secrets, the gap, the body shop, bath and body works, hollister, american eagle outfitters, a&f, frederick's of hollywood... i hate it i hate it i hate it.

i think i had a panic attack and broke down.

i went to southcoast plaza last year for about two hours. it's better than the other westfield malls... but every store is a mini-store. they had a gucci, ysl, chanel, etc... but they were mini-stores. it was nice, but at the same time, that mall mentality drove me insane. the ramps, escalators, mini-stairs, giant christmas tree, and that feeling of going in circles started to get to me and i left.

i think i'm slowly going crazy because of this.

someone send me a ticket to nyc now. or maybe even paris. i need to go visit paris tout suite.
