this is how you teach kids to read
the concept is fucking fantastic and genius.

grounded love
one of my favorite contemporary sculptors is german artist, katharina fritsch.
the image with the people around it is her piece, but the version i saw at the matthew marks gallery years ago was made entirely of just mirror pogs (no yellow or black) in it.
it's weird, because if you think about it, all it is.... is just pogs in the shape of a giant heart.
but gosh darn it, i almost cried because i thought it was so beautiful.
when you are standing there in the quiet of an art gallery, it might tip you off of any type of emotional equilibrium you are on.
my friend dana a. says that when she finally saw the sistine chapel, she started bawling.

the only other piece that has ever moved me to tears is picasso's desmoiselles d'avignon. first off, i am always shocked at the size of any piece of art i've only seen via textbook. i didn't expect it to be HUGE... larger than lifesize. i sat there on the bench and just took it in.

during the rainy season in los angeles, my backyard went nuts. so in a fit of obsessive thinking, i decided to try and mow the entire backyard... it took me two days to reach the image above...
although i wasn't thinking about katharina fritsch's piece, i thought about it two days later and thought that was cool.

initially, i was gonna try and mow the word CRAZY like in the aerosmith video of the same name.

but if i were to do that, i'd need a shirtless farmer to help me navigate the turns... and i was like, too much time...
so i ended up with a heart...
i've actually re-mowed it so make it a little bit more easy to tell what it is... but i need a ladder to get myself on my roof so that i can photograph it that way before i mow it away... maybe.
it's probably nice for the ghetto birds circling my hood to follow crackhead dealers during drug busts... i wish i had access to it so that i could see my backyard topiary...
maybe if i leave it long enough, i'll see it on googlemaps.

chairlift - EVIDENT UTENSILS
the cool term of the day is DATAMOSHING. this is how the chairlift video is styled. i love it. it reminds me of 60's model and sexy icon/artist, verushka.
and the second video of the night is:
bat for lashes - DANIEL
Daniel - Bat For Lashes
it's just soooo beautiful.

absolut mango sex

i have been hearing great fun things about rupaul's drag race show.... so i decided to catch the first episode to see if it's worth it and i wholly agree. it is fun. i totally recommend it.
http://www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/rupauls_drag_race/videos.jhtml
anyways, one of the sponsors of the show is absolut vodka, mango.
so every 6 minutes or so, there's a little mini commercial that goes on while it loads to the next part of the episode and i find myself staring at the ad... A LOT.
it's effective because it's so sensual. at first, i couldn't figure out that it was a mango. it was just too sexual and disturbing at the same time... and then once i realized what it was, it made me wonder why they would have used these images for their ad.
i mean, after all, it's a show on drag queens... wouldn't this work better on the spike channel? i initially took it to be very feminine... not gay.
i immediately thought two things: munch's the scream and a developing fetus in the uterus.... and then i thought georgia o'keefe because of the colors. it's so organic.
and then while i was collaging the images together to show you what i mean, i started looking at it again... and then i realized how GAY sex it was...
1. look at the positioning of the bottle... it looks a lot like anal sex.
2. the mango has a giant seed (sperm!). you use the phallic bottle to seed the fleshiness.
3. the word "comes" is exactly at the entrance of the ass.
4. the motto "true taste comes naturally" is sorta referring to bareback sex.
so i stand corrected. this is a very gay ad.

3 years in the making

i finally got embarrassed and hung up my tord boontje garland lamp thing.
i bought it three years ago on santa monica in some cute home design store... and i finally hung it up in my mini hall area that divides into my bathroom, my bedroom, and my storage room.
and i'm pissed that i didn't hang it up sooner. it's so PRETTYYYYY.

i'm not in love with a british artist

i've never really been a fan of artist sam taylor-wood.
when i think of her, i think of long panoramas of people in a room... very stage-y, very melodramatic, and very celebrity name dropping. oh, and that sad sad music video for elton john and his cd sleeve artwork...
i am mixed about her work. she's married to damien hirst's art dealer... so she's privy to so many celebrities and creative ideas... so when i see her work, i'm like, that's total nepotism. (on this note: she just announced her divorce to him in september)
i saw her video work called THIRD PARTY when i was in nyc and it's basically you as the third party watching other people, celebs like marianne faithfull watching other people at a party. sorta boringish...

then i saw her work again, this time nudes in weird triptych type style images. i did like this floater. there was a series of them.

i had actually forgotten about her until i just saw her new video piece for a song she sings "I'M IN LOVE WITH A GERMAN FILM STAR."
as usual, she had done her best to disinterest me in her work. too conceptual for me? but at the same time it's sorta lazy right? i dunno. i do feel like this has been done before (cliche, je sais) and she hasn't done anything to really give it a twist.
I M IN LOVE WITH A GERMAN FILM STAR
it does however, remind me of the blond redhead song, TOP RANKING with fellow artist, miranda july and directed by mike mills. the twist is good enough to keep attention for the entire song, unlike taylor-wood's.

roisin murphy in nyc! oct 24th!
one of my favorite singers, roisin murphy is making her us debut in nyc on oct 24th!
i am sooooo bummed out! she needs to visit la or i need to visit nyc!
ugh!
so sad!
if you haven't heard of roisin, you probably are wrong... she used to be in a band called moloko. they sang that theme song to great expectations called ingenue... it's a haunting song and unfortunately it's more creepie since gwyenth paltrow was in it. i kid.
anyways. i love roisin for several reasons. i think she writes the most cerebral disco flavored songs ever. an example is the song overpowered. the song is about oxytocin... the orgasm hormone... as well as the lactating hormone. that's so hot! another reason i love her so is that she rocks the gareth pugh couture shite like it's her second skin. and she dances.
i don't know if i ever posted her videos on here.. but i will now. these three songs are awesome! she also recorded a song with calvin harris called off & on which was amazing and was for the overpowered record but she ended up tossing it.. which is a shame cause i think it's AMAZING!

Ryan Trecartin
September 10 - December 7, 2008
Ryan Trecartin's videos uncannily reflect his generation, which grew up using the Internet, digital television, and interactive video games. He mixes cheap special effects with absurd narratives in which he and his regular cast of collaborator-friends act out a sort of Lord of the Flies for the 21st century. He tells sad love stories and bizarre family dramas utilizing technology to heighten the action and reflect today's incessant information overload.
In his latest work, I-BE AREA (2007, 108 min) Trecartin weaves together several unruly stories with fast-moving, fast-talking characters that deal with such themes as cloning, adoption, self-mediation, lifestyle options, virtual identities, and larger questions of an existential nature. I-BE AREA screens in the Video Gallery on the hour, every other hour.
This exhibition is organized by Hammer Curator Ali Subotnick.

funny feeling

you know you're online and wasting time when you decide to google yourself.
i've googled myself a couple of times through the years and it always brings up queasy feelings because 1. i really don't want to know what info about me shows up. 2. i feel like i'm stalking someone, but the someone is myself. 3. i feel silly about it.
so i finally did google myself tonight because it's friday night and and i'm sitting alone with nothing to do. which, is probably good because i'm hella tired and i will probably pass out within the hour.
i am happy to see that i don't show up too much, which is fantastic. i don't want to be easily found via the net.
things that do pop up, are old work assignments i did at nyu... which i don't want popping up anymore, but i'm not sure how i'd be able to get rid of it. i took a class about broadway plays (it was my last semester of school, and it sounded fun, but in the end result, the class sucked and my teacher was really into my classmate (i think sexually) so he got a great grade because of "extra credit" he did) while i did so much work for the group that i was like, WTF man?
one thing that did pleasantly pop up for the first time, probably because i haven't googled myself in awhile, is a brief mention of me in the newspaper about a play i wrote when i was 16/17 years old. it's sorta monumental cause i was the first person to write a sexually driven play. you can check out the blurb about me in 1997.
that just made my night!
okay, gonna go to bed now.
p.s. i don't want to have to apologize about not writing much but i have been terribly busy since july with school and people... but i have about 2 weeks off, sorta, where i will be updating and posting much more often!

do your research maroon 5!
the point of having a split screen is to tell and weave an interesting story. think of cibo matto's sugar water (backwards and forwards) or closing time (missing someone by seconds) by semisonic... or like lauryn hill's doo wop (that thing) which contrasts two different generations.
again, dead eye maroon 5 has failed. he just wants to show off his douchey hipster body (times 2 at the same time) and that's pretty much it. i've seen him in real life, he's HOT! but his videos are so lacking that i wouldn't be bummed if i never see another video by them.
change your vision!

coins

so i've decided to begin something new that will test me on my endurance...
for TEN years, i want to see how much money i find on the streets.
this is the first installment. :)
i went to go pick up brad at LAX and in front of the tom bradley terminal (international), i found a 50 singaporean cent coin next to the luggage carts.
good times.
phillip joked that 50 singaporean cents probably was worth 5 dollars cause of the exchange rate.

daphne's vs gwyneth

i actually like eating food from daphne's, a greek chain restaurant. there's one sorta near me in arcadia/pasadena.
everytime i go there, i see this painting, which i assume, is of the greek myth about daphne whom i believe turns into a tree which produces the leaves that are made into laurel's (the crown of leaves you see in greek myths).
i however, cannot get over the fact that i think the painting makes daphne look a lot like gwyneth paltrow.

my sugar is raw (sticky and sweet) and botoxed
at least i know that if my car broke down, madonna could come over and push it to the local car repair.
madonna's 4 minutes to save the world is starting to grow on me the more that i listen to it.
although i don't think the video is great, it's at least pretty interesting. it sorta made me feel weird when i saw the two couple making out and you can see their internal organs, but a good weird feeling.
i like the fact that the video alludes to justin timberlake just finished having a threesome with that couple, like a hired femme gigolo.
it's a shame that we have one of the best dancers of the 80's, 90's and one of the best dancers of the 00's and the dancing SUCKS. i blame it on madonna's obsession with yoga and pilate poses. it hints to slow-mo break dancing, except that she'd probably break a hip if she did try real break dancing.
one thing that i've noticed is that madonna is really into climbing through things. she did it heavily in 'hung up' and 'sorry' and 'jump' and 'me against the music' which leads me to think that's a metaphor for something kabbalist.
the black/clear thing that eats into each scene is pretty cool. it reminded me of the nothing in "the never ending story" as well as italian futurist, surrealist, and cubist angular paintings. notice the repeated shapes (triangles) in the following youtube video.
futurism, cubism, surrealism
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewRQ7xQTScA
cool right? i studied that in college, so i thought it stuck out quite a bit.
madonna's overall album is amazing. i hated 'confessions on a dance floor' A LOT. i thought it was very self-helpy and weird in a bad way and by no means a dance album. i cannot wait to see the music videos for: candy shop, give it 2 me, she's not me, beat goes on (i think this will be the second single...) and i find 'incredible' wwwwaaaayyy too long and is more of a filler since i think even pharrell was bored by it. 'spanish lesson' is just pure bad pop. i also think that 'devil wouldn't recognize you' has a similar beat to justin timberlake's 'cry me a river,' and i also love that song. so i'm very excited to buy the collector's edition as well as the regular edition of the album when it comes out on tuesday. two bad songs on an entire album is not bad at all.
two reasons why i think this album is successful is because it has such a great combination of euro pop with american hip hop/r&b. it's gritty but still light. i have to say that when you feature kanye or pharrell, you're gonna get something that deals with 'being unmodest yet modest about being flashy/rich and candy,' which is so addictive for some reason. i do feel that pharrell probably suggested some reject beats that came off of gwen stefani's 'the great escape' album. and the second reason is that madonna's voice is slightly smoothed out to give it a cleaner sound. actually, a third comment about why this album is good is because it sounds as though it was written for a young black female r&b singer, like ashanti or beyonce or shareefa or even maybe estelle.
